American Primitive Hooked Rugs
It's back in stock!
American Primitive Hooked Rugs is a delightful and inspiring how-to book written in the easy-to-understand and folksy-style of Emma Lou Lais and Barbara Carroll.
The book is full of color photographs of lovely hand hooked rugs and has great instructions for the new hooker. But 'old hookers' like me, will refer back to it again & again. Included are finishing techniques, descriptions of the tools need for rug hooking, thoughts on where to get wool, even a few great dye receipes!
This is the book I used when I first began hooking.... I would like to say that I'm a self-taught hooker but, in truth, Emma Lou & Barbara were there to help me along the way!
A must-have for your library.

Create & Decorate Magazine
The August 2008 issue of this magazine is just full of wonderful projects and patterns for the crafter.... I love the Lighthouse applique piece on the cover! There's also a fun penny rug sampler hanging (My Deep Country Red hand dyed wool would be perfect for this project). Many, many other rug hooking, penny rug and needle punch projects included..... quite a few with a patriotic theme. If you have not seen this magazine before, I highly recommend it. Each issue has complete directions and patterns for all of the projects featured.

Beautiful Wool by Laurice Heath
This hand-dyers guide is one of the best and most comprehensive dye books ever published. Sadly, it is now out of print. I was so fortunate to find a few new copies of this highly sought-after book but when it’s gone, I won’t be able to get more. The author writes knowledgably and clearly about the handling and dyeing of beautiful wool. The dye recipes are easy to follow and each formula is paired with great suggestions for base wools. Each formula also gives variations for four shade gradations. There are more than 150 formulas, using Cushing’s Acid Dyes and ProChem Acid Dyes, with many variations and suggestions for uses, through instructions, room for your own notes and space to attach your own swatches of dyed wool. There is an especially good chapter about color theory and a great section on common sense dyeing and tools. I've have used this as a resource for years. In fact, one of my most popular colors, Mood Indigo, is a variation I developed from one of the formulas in this dye book. Beautiful Wool is a must-have for every wool dyer's library.
