2010 Beginning Rug Hooking Class Schedule

 

Relax this Summer & Fall by learning the fun, creative art & craft of traditional rug hooking! This fun class is designed for the first-time rug hooker. I will demonstrate all techniques for you but  you will primarily learn by doing in this hands-on class.

 We will cover the basics of rug hooking including information about foundations, good materials for rug hooking, basic hooking directions, cutting your strips, how to hook different shapes and basic techniques for finishing a rug. Time permitting, many other subjects will be covered. By the end of your class session, if you also work on your project at home, you should have completed your first small hooked rug! 
The beginning rug hooking class meets three times and you will need to work on you project between the class meetings. To get the most out our class time, I will contact each class participant to discuss your project before the first class meets.
In addition to the instructional class meetings, you will be invited to attend the monthly hook-in in my studio..... The hook-in is free of charge and is a great environment to work on your project, meet other hookers and see what other hookers are working on.

Sign-up for one session consisting of 3 class meetings in my light & wool-filled studio...

Session I: June 10, 17, & 24; Thursday evenings from 5:30 to 8:30 PM  Sorry...this session is filled.
Session II: July 15, 22, & 29; Thursday evenings from 5:30 to 8:30 PM
Session III: July 17, 24, August 7;Saturdays from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM
Session IV: September 18, October 2 & 18; Saturdays from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM

Class size is limited to 6 participants.

Cost: $125 per 3-class session plus the cost of materials; 50% deposit required at sign-up*

Supplies to Bring to Class: a good quality 14 - 16" quilting hoop and a sharp pair of small fabric scissors

 The Hooked Carpetbag Workshop 

Planning & Preparation Meeting: Saturday, Aug. 28 from 3:00 PM – 4:30 PM
Workshop Weekend: Oct. 23 & 24 from 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Join me for a fun weekend constructing a hooked carpetbag!
At the planning & preparation meeting on August 28th, we will discuss steps to be completed before you begin hooking and discuss strategies for hooking the bag. Then you'll have about 8 weeks to hook your design at home before our 2-day hands-on workshop in October. (Please note....if you're coming from outside the Bay Area to take this workshop, I can work with you via email or telephone to cover the information in the planning session.)
You will bring your completely pre-hooked carpetbag pattern to the workshop & I'll help you turn it into a wonderful & sturdy carpetbag that you'll use for years.
By the end of the workshop, each participant should go home with a completed or nearly completed small carpetbag.
Basic rug hooking, machine sewing and hand sewing skills are necessary for this workshop.
Class size is limited to 6 participants
Cost: $225 plus the cost of any materials purchased; 50% deposit required at sign-up*

 Penny Rug Santa Doll Workshop

 

Workshop: Dec. 4, 2009 from 6:00 – 9:00 PM; Dec. 5 & 6 from 10:00 to 5:00 PM

This workshop will rival Santa’s for its busy activity and, if you work like an elf, you’ll go home with a wonderful handmade 18” Santa with a lively and colorful coat of hand dyed wool decorated in the penny rug style. But, be forewarned! You may have to make more than one because each of your offspring will want one too!

We'll start with a kit from Gail Wilson, add custom dyed woolens and other materials from The Merry Hooker and, over the course of an intensive weekend of fun & creativity, make an heirloom Santa figure guaranteed to make all wool addicts smile.

I’ll share my tips & tricks in the construction and help you with ideas for embellishment to make your Santa unique & beautiful. This project is not hard! There are just a lot of steps and we'll work through them together.

Basic machine & hand sewing skills are required for this workshop.

Class size limited to 10 participants.

Cost: $225, plus the cost of materials (a kit is available.... please ask & we can discuss your preferences for wool colors); 50% deposit required at sign-up*
