Classes & Events at The Merry Hooker Woolens All classes and events are held in The Merry Hooker's light-filled studio in the Historic Waterfront District in Oakland, CA near Jack London Square. If you're coming from outside the San Francisco Bay Area and need lodgeing recommendations, please use the 'Contact Us' button on the left & we'll do our best to help.
Monthly Hook-In in the Studio Join us on the last Saturday of every month for a convivial gathering of hookers to work on a project, visit with old friends and make some new friends. All levels are welcome, from novice to expert. No formal hooking instruction occurs but you're sure to pick up a tidbit or two! This event is free. Our next hook-in takes place on January 30th, 2010 from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Bring your project & your lunch and I'll make a pot of Peet's coffee. If you would like to attend this month's hook-in, please RSVP to me and be sure to include your contact information (email & a phone number) so I can send you directions.
Beginning Rug Hooking Class Schedule Sundays, October 18, 25 and November 8 from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM ... New Beginner's Class coming soon! Relax this fall by learning the fun, creative art & craft of traditional rug hooking! This fun class is designed for the first-time rug hooker. I will demonstrate all techniques for you but you will primarily learn by doing in this hands-on class. We will cover the basics of rug hooking including information about foundations, good materials for rug hooking, basic hooking directions, cutting your strips, how to hook different shapes and basic techniques for finishing a rug. Time permitting, other subjects will be covered. By the end of the class series, if you also work on your project at home, you should have completed your first hooked rug! The beginning rug hooking class meets three times, with a 2-week span between the 2nd & 3rd meeting to give you ample time to work on your project. To get the most out our class time, I will contact each class participant to discuss your project before the first class meets.
In addition to the three class meetings, you will be invited to attend the monthly hook-in in my studio..... The hook-in is free of charge and is a great environment to work on your project, meet other hookers and see what other hookers are working on. Class size is limited to 6 participants. Cost: $125 plus the cost of materials; 50% deposit required at sign-up* Supplies to Bring to Class: a good quality 14 - 16" quilting hoop and a sharp pair of small fabric scissors Prerequisite: A willingness to learn & have fun!

Have you always wanted to learn to make beautiful, professional-looking pillows from your hooked mats? This is your opportunity to learn professional techniques from a master pillow-maker with many years of experience providing couture soft furnishings to the interior design trade.
In this hands-on workshop you will learn professional techniques needed to successfully construct two basic pillow styles using hooked mats. We will cover all the stages of planning & preparing for your pillow construction before you begin hooking and go step-by-step through the actual making of the pillow.
There will be a 3 hour planning & preparation meeting in October to discuss designs, materials and to prepare your pattern for pillow-making. Then you'll have about 6 weeks to hook your design at home  before our 2-day hands-on workshop in November.
By the end of the workshop, each participant should go home with a completed pillow in one of two styles: a knife edge or a boxed shape pillow.
Basic rug hooking, machine sewing and hand sewing skills are necessary for this workshop.
Class size is limited to 12 participants

Penny Rug Santa Doll Workshop Workshop: Dec. 4 from 6:00 – 9:00 PM; Dec. 5 & 6 from 10:00 to 5:00 PM This workshop will rival Santa’s for its busy activity and, if you work like an elf, you’ll go home with a wonderful handmade 18” Santa with a lively and colorful coat of hand dyed wool decorated in the penny rug style. But, be forewarned! You may have to make more than one because each of your offspring will want one too!  We'll start with a kit from Gail Wilson, add custom dyed woolens and other materials from The Merry Hooker and, over the course of an intensive weekend of fun & creativity, make an heirloom Santa figure guaranteed to make all wool addicts smile. I’ll share my tips & tricks in the construction and help you with ideas for embellishment to make your Santa unique & beautiful. This project is not hard! There are just a lot of steps and we'll work through them together. Basic machine & hand sewing skills are required for this workshop. Class size limited to 10 participants. Cost: $225, plus the cost of materials (a kit is available.... please ask & we can discuss your preferences for wool colors); 50% deposit required at sign-up* Materials List provided at class sign-up
